Fiber reduces the risk of Colon Cancer


Fiber reduces the risk of colon cancer, this is one advantage to consume foods that contain lots of fiber. Oatmeal, brown rice, and cereals assessed and effectively reduces the risk of colon cancer, according to an analysis of 25 studies.

However, they found no evidence of a significant reduction the risk of colon cancer in the fiber in fruits or vegetables.

According to a study of British Medical Journal on last week, found that for every increase of 10 grams of fiber intake per day, there was a 10 percent risk of colorectal cancer

So, people who have eaten foods that contain 5 grams of fiber a day had a 10 percent reduction in risk, especially if they ate 15 grams a day.

There is also a 20 percent reduction in risk for every three servings a day of fiber (90 g daily) of whole grains, including cereals, whole wheat bread, oatmeal and brown rice.

The researchers, including experts from Imperial College London and University of Leeds, said, "Our results showed 10% reduction in risk of colorectal cancer for each fiber intake of 10 grams/day of total fiber and cereal fiber and about 20 percent reduction for each of the three portions (90 grams/day) of wheat every day, and further reduction with a higher intake".

The lifetime risk of developing colon cancer for men is about one in 18 times, but for women, about one in 20 cases. Previous studies indeed have produced mixed results on whether the opinion of the fiber reduces the risk of colon cancer.

Therefore, researchers need further study to determine the type of fiber with the involvement of lifestyle factors, quoted from the Press Association on Friday (20/11).

The meanwhile, CEO of Bowel Cancer UK, Deborah Alsina, said, "Simple changes in diet and lifestyle can make a big difference. Changes such as increasing fiber intake reduces the risk of colon cancer.
